Rushdie's Rinky Dink Target of Angry Mecca Mob
As thousands of Saudi Muslims circled the holy Mecca shrine, they held up match sticks to symbolize Salmon Rushdie's penis burned in effigy. "We thought about burning sticks, boards, pencils, hot dogs, but hot dogs are made from pork and so we don't have them though some suggest veggie dogs and so we finally we settled on a tiny little match stick. He doesn't deserve bigger," said Fauzi Fawzani, an Arab coffee shop owner in Mecca.
Rushdie has shrugged off renewed threats resulting from the release in the U.S. of a 13 minute film trailer produced by a Coptic Christian. The violent reaction in Lybia to the film's release was responsible for the death of four U.S. embassy staff members in the worst violence against American diplomats in decades.
